Community of developers (sometimes branded 'scientific Ruby') working to bring scientific computing and data-science capabilities to Ruby, competing with Python's entrenched scientific stack. Victor Shepelev spent three years contributing, running Google Summer of Code projects with students. He reports the effort has not gained traction: Python's head start dominates industry, open-source scientific work driven by summer students is largely ignored, and the Japanese part of the Ruby community works and communicates only in Japanese and doesn't engage with the English-speaking scientific Ruby effort.
